The farmers of Fischerhude
Tradition and present situation of Fischerhude farmersSince ages, the free farmers of Fischerhude have the right to fish in all watercourses of the Wuemme river and to do the small game hunt in the sourrounding areas.
Up to now, in small cottages directly on the watercourses wild ducks were fed on, for using them as decoys within the ducks hunt (Pooljagd) in the late autumn.
According to further taken water structural measures, the fishing fortune of the Wuemme was lost; the swamps became meadows; the former flooding areas became farmland.
Today the farmers persue the ecological agriculture at modern family farms and in part they market their products themselves. Among one another, they proudly speak their own dialect of Low German language, which is only be given in Fischerhude. Aside from ecologically agricultural use of this area, part of meadows and courses of water became renatured, to recreate biotopes for the varied native flora and fauna.
